Teaching Artist

 What is a teaching artist?

Good question. A teaching artist is very different from a classroom art teacher. I really like Eric Booth's definition:

“A teaching artist is a practicing artist who develops the complementary skills, curiosities and habits of mind of an educator, who can effectively engage a wide range of participants in learning experiences in, through, and about the arts.”
(Booth, Eric. 2020 Revised.

Puppetry is an engaging artform that should be on stages, in classrooms, on street corners, in nursing homes, and visiting children in hospitals. It is an interdisciplinary art form that encompasses design, construction, writing, performance, movement, and so much more. Puppetry can be set to music, giving it an added dimension. It can be small like in Teatro Lambe Lambe or BIG in a parade.

Puppetry is a naturally inclusive artform -- it involves and audience, an invitation, and can involve multiple performers (or just one with a limitless cast size!). I love the way puppetry connects people, ideas, materials, and communities. I have shared my art form in preschool classrooms, senior centers, high schools, elementary schools, libraries, community centers, and fields. I provide "quick dips" with a single interaction and longform residencies, too. I work with beginners and masters. Below I have a few images from some previous programs. Hover above each image for more information. If you would like more information, please contact me.
